La Habitación

Restoration and extension of a house built by Smiljan Radić in 1997 in San Miguel, Chiloé. Abandoned by its former owners, the house had severe structural damage, with a collapsed roof and decaying floors and ceilings. The brief was to rehabilitate the original volume respecting its design and add a programme that lets it serve as a shared space for events or as a guest house.

The new volume, which holds the main bathroom, sits one level lower and creates a deck-pier over its roof, reached from the restored volume. The original stair, which led to the attic, was removed and relocated to connect with the extension.

From outside, the volume reads as a hidden base. From inside it is revealed as a sculptural piece: the WC sits inside a cylinder and a hot tub is placed at deck level, completing an immersive experience in the landscape of Chiloé.
